Hail and Kill!

sunnO)))-Monoliths & Dimensions

Got back from camping in Idaho yesterday and saw this:

Available now from Southern Lord. I’m really looking forward to hearing this one. Hopefully Slasher Sylvan has this for Friday’s show. If not, I’ll have to wait to play it later in the month.

Nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls

If you deny the power of the Loaf on Bat Out of Hell you can kiss my ass.

That sweaty round bastard, Jim Steinman, Todd Rundgren and a chunk of the Boss’ E Street band made the best rock opera, musical or whatever you want to call it ever made. When you listen to the Loaf’s deliver he’s feeling it and the band matches his every mood.

Growing up near Cleveland in the 70’s it was impossible not to be subjected to a massive dose of Bat. Released on the Cleveland International label (based in Willoughby, Ohio) and heavily supported by local radio it all I can remember hearing in 1978. My mom had the 8 track and with my sister they wore the shit out of it. I have a clear memory of including “2 Out of 3 Ain’t Bad” in a dig directed at my cousin during a family camping trip. The Loaf was everywhere. I’ve owned and disowned the 8 track, tape, LP and CD countless times in my life but like a post-nuclear cockroach it always finds a way to wriggle it’s way into the stereo. Right now I have a CD burn but I find myself digging around for it so often I might as well enshrine it in the collection where it can be displayed.

Loaf, you son of a bitch. I want you, I need you but there ain’t no way I’m ever going to love you.

British Tribal Music

Woke up with the Hawkwind tune (You Shouldn’t Do That) I played on Friday night in my head.

Fuckin’ hippies.

Threads

Here’s a band who decided to get back together and do it without living off past glory (unlike My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, Jane’s Addiction and a handful of other lame ass retreads). Portishead not only managed to make an album that holds up with the old stuff, they had the guts to try something different.

“Threads”, my favorite track off of Third.

Another Easter Gem

They’re walking by the night
The moon has frozen blue
Long black coats a shelter for the rain
Their load must get through

Now bats are leaving their trees
They’re joining the call
Seven satanic Hell preachers
Heading for the hall

Bringing the blood of a newborn child
Got to succeed, if not it’s Satan’s fall

Home… Come home
Evil messengers with blood stained wings
Home… Come home
Home… Come home

Is it Satan’s fall?

No… It’s Satan’s call

Craniums high on stakes
It’s Satan’s epigraph
Something you can’t erase… 666
They call him the beast

Use your demon eyes, uncover the disguise
Time is out.. Yeah, I don’t need your god
Oh the law of Satan
Pray and obey it forever
Oh the law of Satan

Innocent lovers…it’s a lie

Iron fists won’t do no good against the evil eyes
Of seven holy Hell preachers, don’t you even try
Now they cross the river Styx and see the castle rise
So high

Waiting on the other shore for Charon to arrive
A shape with horns and glowing eyes, Satan’s still alive
He receives the sacrifice with evil laughs and pride
You better escape, you’ve got to escape
You cannot escape
